GeneralDescription

TheLM1117isaseriesoflowdropoutvoltageregulatorswithadropoutof1.2Vat800mAofloadcurrent.Ithasthesamepin-outasNationalSemiconductor’sindustrystandardLM317.

TheLM1117isavailableinanadjustableversion,whichcansettheoutputvoltagefrom1.25Vto13.8Vwithonlytwoexternalresistors.Inaddition,itisalsoavailableinfivefixedvoltages,1.8V,2.5V,2.85V,3.3V,and5V.

TheLM1117offerscurrentlimitingandthermalshutdown.Itscircuitincludesazenertrimmedbandgapreferencetoas-sureoutputvoltageaccuracytowithin±1%.

TheLM1117seriesisavailableinLLP,TO-263,SOT-223,TO-220,andTO-252D-PAKpackages.Aminimumof10µFtantalumcapacitorisrequiredattheoutputtoimprovethetransientresponseandstability.

Aninputcapacitorisrecommended.A10µFtantalumontheinputisasuitableinputbypassingforalmostallapplications.1.2AdjustTerminalBypassCapacitor

Theadjustterminalcanbebypassedtogroundwithaby-passcapacitor(CADJ)toimproveripplerejection.Thisby-passcapacitorpreventsripplefrombeingamplifiedastheoutputvoltageisincreased.Atanyripplefrequency,theimpedanceoftheCADJshouldbelessthanR1topreventtheripplefrombeingamplified:1/(2π*fRIPPLE*CADJ)TheR1istheresistorbetweentheoutputandtheadjustpin.Itsvalueisnormallyintherangeof100-200Ω.Forexample,withR1=124ΩandfRIPPLE=120Hz,theCADJshouldbe>11µF.

1.3OutputCapacitor

Theoutputcapacitoriscriticalinmaintainingregulatorsta-bility,andmustmeettherequiredconditionsforbothmini-mumamountofcapacitanceandESR(EquivalentSeriesResistance).TheminimumoutputcapacitancerequiredbytheLM1117is10µF,ifatantalumcapacitorisused.Anyincreaseoftheoutputcapacitancewillmerelyimprovetheloopstabilityandtransientresponse.TheESRoftheoutputcapacitorshouldrangebetween0.3Ω-22Ω.Inthecaseoftheadjustableregulator,whentheCADJisused,alargeroutputcapacitance(22µftantalum)isrequired.2.0OutputVoltage

TheLM1117adjustableversiondevelopsa1.25Vreferencevoltage,VREF,betweentheoutputandtheadjustterminal.AsshowninFigure1,thisvoltageisappliedacrossresistorR1togenerateaconstantcurrentI1.ThecurrentIADJfromtheadjustterminalcouldintroduceerrortotheoutput.Butsinceitisverysmall(60µA)comparedwiththeI1andveryconstantwithlineandloadchanges,theerrorcanbeig-nored.TheconstantcurrentI1thenflowsthroughtheoutputsetresistorR2andsetstheoutputvoltagetothedesiredlevel.

Forfixedvoltagedevices,R1andR2areintegratedinsidethedevices.

3.0LoadRegulation

TheLM1117regulatesthevoltagethatappearsbetweenitsoutputandgroundpins,orbetweenitsoutputandadjustpins.Insomecases,lineresistancescanintroduceerrorstothevoltageacrosstheload.Toobtainthebestloadregula-tion,afewprecautionsareneeded.

Figure2,showsatypicalapplicationusingafixedoutputregulator.TheRt1andRt2arethelineresistances.ItisobviousthattheVLOADislessthantheVOUTbythesumofthevoltagedropsalongthelineresistances.Inthiscase,theloadregulationseenattheRLOADwouldbedegradedfromthedatasheetspecification.Toimprovethis,theloadshouldbetieddirectlytotheoutputterminalonthepositivesideanddirectlytiedtothegroundterminalonthenegativeside.

Withanextremelylargeoutputcapacitor(≥1000µF),andwithinputinstantaneouslyshortedtoground,theregulatorcouldbedamaged.

Inthiscase,anexternaldiodeisrecommendedbetweentheoutputandinputpinstoprotecttheregulator,asshowninFigure4.

RegulatorWhentheadjustableregulatorisused(Figure3),thebestperformanceisobtainedwiththepositivesideoftheresistorR1tieddirectlytotheoutputterminaloftheregulatorratherthanneartheload.Thiseliminateslinedropsfromappearingeffectivelyinserieswiththereferenceanddegradingregu-lation.Forexample,a5Vregulatorwith0.05Ωresistancebetweentheregulatorandloadwillhavealoadregulationduetolineresistanceof0.05ΩxIL.IfR1(=125Ω)iscon-nectedneartheload,theeffectivelineresistancewillbe0.05Ω(1+R2/R1)orinthiscase,itis4timesworse.Inaddition,thegroundsideoftheresistorR2canbereturnednearthegroundoftheloadtoprovideremotegroundsens-ingandimproveloadregulation.

Whenanintegratedcircuitoperateswithanappreciablecurrent,itsjunctiontemperatureiselevated.Itisimportanttoquantifyitsthermallimitsinordertoachieveacceptableperformanceandreliability.Thislimitisdeterminedbysum-mingtheindividualpartsconsistingofaseriesoftempera-turerisesfromthesemiconductorjunctiontotheoperatingenvironment.Aone-dimensionalsteady-statemodelofcon-ductionheattransferisdemonstratedinFigure5.Theheatgeneratedatthedevicejunctionflowsthroughthedietothedieattachpad,throughtheleadframetothesurroundingcasematerial,totheprintedcircuitboard,andeventuallytotheambientenvironment.Belowisalistofvariablesthatmayaffectthethermalresistanceandinturntheneedforaheatsink.

Undernormaloperation,theLM1117regulatorsdonotneedanyprotectiondiode.Withtheadjustabledevice,theinternalresistancebetweentheadjustandoutputterminalslimitsthecurrent.Nodiodeisneededtodivertthecurrentaroundtheregulatorevenwithcapacitorontheadjustterminal.Theadjustpincantakeatransientsignalof±25Vwithrespecttotheoutputvoltagewithoutdamagingthedevice.

Whenaoutputcapacitorisconnectedtoaregulatorandtheinputisshortedtoground,theoutputcapacitorwilldischargeintotheoutputoftheregulator.Thedischargecurrentde-pendsonthevalueofthecapacitor,theoutputvoltageoftheregulator,andrateofdecreaseofVIN.IntheLM1117regu-lators,theinternaldiodebetweentheoutputandinputpinscanwithstandmicrosecondsurgecurrentsof10Ato20A.
