Desperate Housewives is an American television comedy-drama series created by Marc Cherry and produced by ABC Studios and Cherry Productions. The setting of the show is the street of Wisteria Lane in the fictional American town of Fairview in the Eagle State. It main follows the lives of four women seen through the eyes of their dead neighbor. Gaby is the glamrous one. Susan is the adorable one. Lernate is smart. Bree is domestic. Edie is very very open-minded. They work through domestic struggles and family life, while facing the secrets, crimes and mysteries hidden behind the doors of their beautiful and seemingly perfect suburban neighbourhood.
Since its premiere on ABC on October 3, 2004, the show has been well received by viewers and critics alike. The show is a multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award winner. The series premiere drew 21.6 million viewers and the show's first season finale attracted over 30 million viewers. In 2007 it was reported to be the most popular show in its demographic worldwide, with an audience of approximately 120 million and was also reported that the series is the third most watched TV show in a study of ratings in 20 countries. In 2010, it was the most-watched comedy series internationally, with an average viewership of 51.6 million viewers across 68 territories. It has held this position since 2006. Moreover, it was the third-highest revenue earning show for 2010, with US$2.74 million per half hour.It was officially renewed by ABC on May 17, 2011 for an eighth season.
Why does the show was so populated? That is because this show is close to our real life and we have realized some life lessons from it.
The producer of this show told us this story as a spectator from the beginning to the end. In this show,every actress has her own characters, but what can they do themselves to find their own happiness?
Through it , we could take some warnings from it. We are always fond of making some comments on others but ignoring some gossips from them. Badly, it is so easy for human being to blame others and find a excuse for themselves to be forgiven.This show is fulled with household trivial and some quarrels between the dear friends and neighbours. In the first season,the main mystery of it is the unexpected suicide of Mary Alice Young, and her husband and son's involvement in the events leading up to it. Bree fights to save her marriage, Lynette struggles to cope with her demanding children, Susan fights Edie Britt for new neighbour Mike Delfino's affection, and Gabrielle tries to prevent her husband Carlos from discovering that she is having an affair with their gardener, John Rowland. The end of the first season results in Rex dying while believing Bree has poisoned him, Carlos being informed of Gaby's affair by John himself before being sent to
prison, a fired Tom allowing Lynette to take his place as the bread-winner of the household, and a cliffhanger which puts Mike in danger of being shot by his own son. And in the It has shown an ordinary picture of our ordinary life for us ordinary viewers.
Although it's a teleplay make up by many fragmentary materials but has reached its goal, as far as i am concerned. Desperate housewives has shown the living scenes about four housewives on the surface, but the clever producer had laid a few mysterious clues to attract viewers at the beginning,based on the battles inside the four families. Much more than this, this show skillfully combined the characters of formal-play, soap play and scene comedy as a whole. Those made Desperate Housewives to be a postmodern ironic play. Our Chinese people are used to hide our inner thoughts and dare not to speak it out. The four central actress in this play are brave to express themselves frankly, no matter what complaints or misunderstanding appeared in their life . And also, they know how to against with the sufferings which gifted from God and change the bad situations with their optimistic heart in a possible time. Besides, the friendship in it is a special part for the viewers. It raised their hope of life when any one of them wanted to give up her life. In a word, i think that the optimism is the most beautiful quality for these females. No matter what happened, playing cards,dating, quarreling, leaving, death or even murdering, these four ladies are still stand there to help each other as a neighbour or one of their family members. They are spending their whole life on struggling with any desperate situations. Actually, there have no desperate housewives at all, because they have learned some valuable experiences from the life.
