英语议论文在表达上多使用有辩论、推理等含义的连接词和过渡词等的结构,如since, now that(既然),therefore(因而),consequently(因此),accordingly(因此),hence(因而),in that case(在那种情况下)。还有些常用句型比如It follows that„(因而„„),If„,we may conclude that„(如果„„,我们可以这样下结论„„),It is true that„,but„(诚然„„,但是„„),Even if„(即使„„)等。
(1) The best title of the passage should be ______. (2) The main idea of the passage is _______.
(1) According to the passage, the author mentions _______. (2) Which of the following does the author NOT discuss? ▲
(1) This passage is particularly written for ______. (2) The author is trying to tell us ______.
(1) The author's attitude toward *** is _______.
1
(2) When the author says ***, he really means ______.
Every year, approximately 1.6 billion tons of soil flows into the Yellow River, China's second longest river. The soil contains materials to keep the natural balance of the area. Over time, a lot of soil has been removed, which has caused serious erosion of the land along the River. In some areas in Shanxi Province, this has destroyed almost all the land, and has forced many local farmers to move to other areas.
It is a huge job to control Yellow River erosion. Many people believe this kind of work is best done by government or international organizations. You may agree with this point of view. If so, it is time for you to think again.
In fact, it is you who have the most important role to play in stopping Yellow River erosion. Did you know the importance of your 5 yuan? For a start, it can buy you a tree, which will help make soil stay on the land. On land with rich soil, local farmers can grow crops to make a living. With the money they earn from their crops, farmers buy goods or services. This helps to develop local economies.
Still puzzled how your 5 yuan can have so much effect? Well, just take a look at the fact below. Since 1997, a tree-planting programme has changed the Jiuchengong Valley in Inner Mongolia into a green homeland. Visitors from all over the world now come to admire this great achievement. What is more, the success of the programme has greatly improved the lives of the local people. Just think, all this started with 5yuan! So when you have 5yuan in your pocket next time, think twice about how to use the money. Remember you can use it to buy a tree and create a green future for our motherland, our people and yourself.
(选自北京师范大学出版社《普通高中课程标准实验教科书·英语4》--- Unit 10) ◆ The passage mainly tells us _______. A. a lot of soil has flowed into the Yellow River B. everyone should take action to help make soil stay C. it's the government's work to control Yellow River erosion D. 5 yuan helped Jiuchengong Valley change into a green home land
从第二段\"Many people believe this kind of work is best done ... If so, it is time for you to think again.\"可以看出作者对于防止水土流失提出了个人见解--不仅仅是和国际组织的职责,每个人都可以为保持水土尽自己一份力,并且在下文对该观点进行了充足的论证,同时也表明C选项错误。
◆ According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true? A. The soil can keep the natural balance. B. Farmers can make a living with 5yuan.
C. A lot of work is required to control Yellow River erosion. D. The tree-planting programme is successful in some areas.
从文章第一段\"The soil contains materials to keep the natural balance of the area.\"可知选项A正确。选项B来
2
Because of the advertising boom, people are used to seeing high standards of visual design. Modern advertisements must stand out in a world full of competition by combining the highest standards of design with ideas linked to the products to make them more attractive. For example, some advertisements may suggest that buying a car can make you free. That is, they use the concept of freedom to sell the car. Other common ideas include happiness, wealth and success. In fact, in the world of advertisements, such content is as old as advertising itself.
(选自北京师范大学出版社《普通高中课程标准实验教科书·英语4》--- Unit 11) ◆ We can infer from the passage that ______. A. as long as you own a car, you own freedom B. old concepts of a production are better than new ones C. ideas linked to the products determine the success of an ad
D. an ad with high stands of visual design and linking ideas is successful
Because we have so much to choose from, many companies and stores offer advice about what we should eat. Books, magazines and television shows tell us about food and pills we should buy to become smarter, healthier and more beautiful. It is probably better, however, if we spend our time and money in buying good food and keeping a balanced diet. If we eat healthy food in the right amounts, we do not have to buy any supplements. The same goes for \"crash diets\" that some companies say will make us lose weight fast. Instead of eating expensive diet food or going on unhealthy diets, we can simply try to eat less fat and sugar and exercise more.
Unit 13) ◆ What is the author's attitude towards the advice offered by various media? A. Uninterested B. Negative C. Objective D. Unmentioned
通过\"It is probably better, however, if we„, we do not have to buy any supplements.\"和最后一句话\"Instead of eating expensive diet food „and exercise more.\"我们可以得知,如果我们购买优质的食物、均衡饮食或者少吃脂肪、糖,多锻炼,就不必购买营养品。

EU to begin phasing out standard light bulbs
The European Union(EU欧盟) will start making the change from traditional bulbs to more energy efficient ones. Several nations including Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Philippines have already announced they will phase out1 these traditional bulbs as well. In 2007, President George W. Bush signed a bill that called for the traditional bulbs to be phased out in the U.S. from 2012.
4
The new European Union rules follow an agreement reached by the 27 EU governments last year to phase out the traditional lightbulb over three years. It is to help European countries lower greenhouse gas emissions2 and control climate change, the EU spokesman said on Monday. As part of the plan, old standard bulbs will no longer be produced or imported into the EU countries. However, consumers will still be able to buy the old bulbs until they are sold out. The spokesman also said the measure would save about $14 billion a year for the economy. At the same time, it could help families cut their daily cost, which can be easily noticed from their bills. In addition, the more efficient bulbs would bring energy savings of 25 percent to 75 percent, compared to the traditional ones.

Festivals Section A
When we say the word \"Spain\images of Latin passion1, flamenco (弗拉门科民歌) and proud bullfighters come to mind. Actually, its cultural richness is best represented by the annual2 week-long festival during the last week of April -- Abril Feria(守护神节), or the April Fair. The site of the April Fair is a square with streets named after famous bullfighters and cultural figures. This is fit for the festival that started in the 19th century in response to the rise of foreign culture in Spain. Indeed, the routine of the April Fair sometimes must be fixed. People sleep for only a few hours a day, take turns to work and then dance and eat for the rest of the day. They stop only for a mid-day horse-ride or to watch an evening bullfight. Even then, industrial production in Seville (塞维利亚) , Spain's third largest city, is seriously interrupted by the celebrations. But perhaps this is a small price to pay for having an annual reunion with friends and relatives as well as the chance to celebrate Spaun's traditional culture.
One of the most popular spectacles is the performance by professional flamenco dancers and musicians, especially when everyone joins in the fun. Ladies dance to the rhythmic3 claps of friends and relatives. Men seldom dance but are great singers of Spanish songs. If you like music, you should go to the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in Kuching. It insists that \"music that is difficult and demanding is good for you, whether you like it or not!\" If you actually don't like a piece of music, don't listen to it. There is plenty to choose among RWMF's 17 performers and bands. Some of the music on offer is not easy to listen to. It often doesn't follow the standard sounds of rock, blues or jazz, and it often uses rhythms that many of us can't immediately identify. Some of the sounds are not necessarily melodic1. Some of the music is difficult for the average western biased2 listener to appreciate.
6
It is a completely different experience to watch and listen at the same time. Listening alone, you will often gain something meaningful. Most of the performers are folk musicians, but they are almost fully aware of the leading popular music styles. There is no rejection3 of \"mainstream\" music; however, there is a willingness to experiment and combine their own traditional styles with others.
After all, \"world music\" is folk music, which is all about what folk like to hear, not just what is \"good\" for them, so it has developed by responding to the audience. Long long ago, the world was flooded with evils. The gods were helpless and they could do nothing to control the evils in the world.
In extreme fear they turned to the goddess Devi for help. Devi agreed to end the evils, and took on the overall black form to do so. This form of Devi is known as Kali, which means \"black\". In this form, Devi then went to kill and destroy all the evil in the world.
Kali became so angry that she could not stop, even when all the evils had been destroyed. She began destroying the entire world. The gods asked her to stop, but she didn't listen to them. When I was young, I dreamed of traveling all over the world and meeting people from different nations. That was one of the reasons I decided to start a career in language teaching in my country.
After some years of hard work in Colombia, my dream came true thanks to the British Council(英国文化协会). I knew the mission1 of this organization was to offer assistance to people studying foreign languages, so I applied for a job at a school in the south of England. My job was teaching Spanish to small groups of middle school students. It was a rewarding2 experience. Not only did I learn a lot about British culture, but it also enriched my language-teaching experience.
8
I must say that if I hadn’t participated in this programme, I probably would never have had a chance to travel around Britain, or discover that some of the theories about the British were not true. Before coming to the UK, I’d often heard people say the British were not friendly. But the truth is that I met many friendly British people, who always seemed ready and even happy to help. I would describe them as being very patient with and tolerant towards foreigners.
Finally I became a qualified3 teacher and was able to teach in other countries. I will always be thankful for institutions4 such as the British Council, whose main goal is to improve understanding among people from different cultures.

Topic: Money Section A
Have you been refused a short-term loan by your bank? If you have used up all other choices, I advise you to borrow money from friends and family members. Borrowing means that you will pay the money back, and you shouldn’t ruin the relationships. Here are my suggestions.
Make a list of friends and family to whom you are close enough to borrow money from. Put them in order based on who, by your best guess, has the most discretionary cash on hand. Decide how much you need, and do not underestimate. Determine how much you can pay back each week or month, and how long it will take to pay it all back.
Explain why you need to borrow money; the person you are borrowing from has every right to know.
Ask for a specific amount, and give the lender a repayment schedule. Be polite, and don’t get angry if you’re refused. Borrowing money, even if someone turns you down, can ruin a relationship! Be careful and thankful, and change the subject quickly. If a person says no, don’t ask again.
Repay the agreed amount on time. Sometimes you may need to borrow from other people to repay your loan; you should let everyone know how many people are involved*. Note:*involve v.

I couldn’t believe my eyes: it was a money tree! Dollar bills were stuck all over that tree, and there was a note which read: \"I owe you eight hours of digging time. Love, Marvin.\"
Marvin, my first son, kept his promise. He dug up a nice ten-by-fifteen-foot bed1 for me. My other children bought me tools, a sunflower stepping stone2 and gardening books. We built a garden together.
That was three years ago. My garden is now very pretty, and just what I’d always wanted. When I go out to weed or tend my flowers, I don’t seem to miss my children as much as I once did. Cattle, which included cows, sheep and camels, were the first and oldest form of money. With the introduction of agriculture, grain and other vegetable or plant products were also used as a standard form of barter1 in many cultures.
B. 1,000 BC:
Bronze and copper money was manufactured in China at the end of the Stone Age, and is considered the earliest form of metal coin. Metal tools, such as knives or spades, were also first used as money in China, and developed into primitive2 versions of round coins. These often contained holes so that they could be put together on a string.
C. 500 BC:
Outside China, the first coins were lumps3 of silver. They soon took on the familiar round form that coins have today, and were used by emperors to mark their success. These early coins first appeared in Turkey. And unlike Chinese coins which depended on base metals, they were made of precious metals such as silver, bronze and gold, which had more value.
D. 806 AD:
The first paper banknotes appeared in China. In all, China had paper money for over 500 years, from the 9th to the 15th centuries. Then, starting in 1455, paper money disappeared in China for several hundred years. This was still many years before paper currency4 appeared in Europe.
E. 1535:
Wampum5 —strings of beads6 made from shells —was first used as money by North American Indians in 1535. The Indian word \"wampum\" means white, which is the color of the beads.
F. 1816:
Gold was officially made to measure the standard of value in England in 1816. Banknotes had been used in England and Europe for several hundred years, but their worth had never been tied directly to that of gold.

Anne Sewell Young was born on January 2, 1871, in the United States. She earned her bachelor’sdegree1 in 12 from Carleton College in Minnesota, where she also completed a master’sdegree2 in 17. She went on to earn a PhD3 (something very unusual for women in those days) from Columbia University in 1906.
Anne Sewell Young was the most famous of the early astronomy students at Carleton College, and one of the few professional women astronomers of her days. Carleton produced half a dozen professional women astronomers in the first 50 years of the course, but she was the only one whose name was recorded in the college’s \"Who’s Who\"(名人录).
Anne Sewell Young was a member of the AAVSO(美国变星观测者协会). She handed in over 6,500 observations4 over a 33-year period, and was also one of the first AAVSO Council members.
In 1881, Mt. Holyoke College set up the John Payson Williston Observatory (天文台), and in 19 Young was named its director. In 1903, a library and a lecture room were added to the observatory building, and in 1907 astronomy was made a course in which one could major at the college, with Young serving as Department Chair. She retired in 1936, and Alice Farnsworth succeeded her.
Young continued to work on astronomy, publishing her last paper in 1942. She died on August 15, 1961, in California.

Over the centuries, a number of famous astronomers have made great contributions to the science of astronomy. Without the efforts of such greats as Ptolemy, Galileo and Isaac Newton, we would not know as much about the planets and stars as we do.
We know a lot about our planet, the solar system and other galaxies1. But it wasn’t always this way. Before the invention of the telescope2, people could only observe the stars with their naked eyes3.
Here’s some information on some of the most famous astronomers.
Ptolemy
Little is known about Ptolemy, whose given name was Claudius Ptolemaeus. While many researchers believe he was Greek, others think that he was just born in Greece. What we do know about Ptolemy is that he wrote several scientific papers, three of which contributed greatly to Islamic (教的) and European science: \"The Great Treatise\Books\".
Galileo
Galileo Galilei was born in Italy on February 15, 15, and made a number of contributions to the science of astronomy, including the introduction of the use of the telescope to observe the sky. Galileo, the first to systematically study Uniformly Accelerated Motion (匀加速运动), also discovered the four largest satellites of Jupiter. The phrases \"The Father of Modern Observational Astronomy\been used to describe Galileo.
Newton
Isaac Newton was born in England on January 4, 13. He advanced the Scientific Revolution with his work, \"Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy\in which he described the Three Laws of Motion (三大运动定律), as well as Universal Gravitation (万有引力). Newton was the first to use the Latin term \"gravitas\"to describe the force of gravity. The refracting telescope (折射望远镜) was also invented by him. DreamWorks Studios plans to tell Martin Luther King’s story on the big screen in a film to be co-produced by Steven Spielberg.
DreamWorks said the film would be the first film allowed to use King’s intellectual property1, including speeches and other works, as the basis for the film.
Dexter King, one of King’s sons said that he hoped the movie would be the final film about his father’s life and legacy2. Two other King’s children —Bernice King and Martin Luther King III —said that they disagreed with the deal. They have been involved in several disputes3 about their father’s intellectual property in the past year.
It is not clear when the movie might be made. DreamWorks Studios doesn’t believe that different opinions among King’s children will affect the film plan.
Although several movies about King’s life have been broadcasted on television, the 19 Nobel Peace Prize winner has only been on the silver screen once. The documentary \"King: A Filmed Record ...
1. The poster introduces us to ________. 2. The email mainly tells us about ______.
1. When is the sports meeting going to be held?2. Jason will invite all of the following EXCEPT ______ to his birthday party.

In a university cafeteria1, women are found to spend more time than men deciding what they will have for lunch. They tend to choose their familiar food, while men are more likely to try new products.
Cameras are watching them. From inside a control room, researchers take notes of their movements, hesitations2, facial expressions, weights and even eating habits.
The study is being run by scientists at Wageningen University and Research Center. With the cameras and other machines, the researchers hope to reduce eating to a science. The cafeteria serves about 200 diners a day, and about 480 people have agreed to take part in the study and be monitored. Ordinary visitors are not studied.
Hidden cameras can catch faces or plates, or pull back to view a whole table, or a broad section of the cafeteria. They record not only what food the customers select, but the food they almost select, and how long they pause before deciding. Facial recognition software records their levels of enjoyment, and in the control room the scientists watch the action on screens. They’re

A mobile phone designed for children as young as four is available in Britain. This toy-like mobile phone has just five buttons. They include an \"on\"button, an \"off\"button, and two buttons with either a male or a female figure —one of which calls Mum, the other Dad. Another button controls a phone book that contains up to 20 numbers. However, the phone book is strictly protected, and can only be entered with permission from a parent. In addition, the phone can’t be used to download documents from the Internet, and can be set to block1 calls from unknown numbers.
However, parents, experts and the government have warned against the use of such phones. Parents are worried that radiation2 from them may be harmful to their children’s health. Professor Lawrie Challis, who led a government study of mobile phone safety, says that it has found that 52% of UK children aged five to nine have mobile phones, while among ten- to fourteen-year-old children, almost 85% of them have mobile phones. He thinks that students should not have phones at all. Aine Lynch of the National Parents Council says, \"The idea of selling a mobile phone to a four-year-old worries us. Why do kids even need to be contacted by a mobile phone? Why are they not in the care of parents or teachers?\"
The government has advised parents to avoid giving phones to children under 16, and other countries are taking an even stricter attitude. Writing about your feelings can help you overcome emotional upset and leave you feeling happier, psychologists have found.
Writing seems to help the brain regulate emotion. Brain scans1 on volunteers have shown that putting feelings down on paper helps control negative emotions. Matthew Lieberman, a psychologist at the University of California in Los Angeles, led this study. In it, the brain activity of people writing about their feelings matched that seen in volunteers who were trying to control their emotions.
Volunteers were invited to visit the lab for a brain scan and asked to write for twenty minutes a day for four consecutive2 days. Half of them wrote about a recent emotional experience, while the other half wrote about a common experience. Those who wrote about an emotional experience showed more activity in the part of the brain responsible for controlling emotions. The findings suggest that keeping a diary, writing poetry, or creating song lyrics can help people get over emotional upset.
The study also shows that writing about emotions in plain language is more calming than describing them in vivid3 language. The latter could remind people of their original feelings.
The study raises the question why so many writers are not happy. \"What we don’t know is: what would that person be like if he or she weren’t writing? \"Dr. Lieberman says. Notes:1. scan n.

Do you know what to do if you are indoors during an earthquake? This simple how-to tips will help you a lot.
27
1. Stay indoors. Do not go outside. People are more likely to get injured by things falling off the building while going outside.
2. Drop before the earthquake drops you. Use the \"drop, cover and hold\" method. Drop to the ground, take cover under a strong object and cover your head with your hands and arms.
3. Get under something heavy. If possible, get under something heavy, like a desk or a table. Get down low and make sure that you are protected from things that might be falling in your home.
4. Seek other supports if you can’t shelter1 under something. If you’re not able to get under something heavy, get under the corner of a wall. Make yourself as small as possible.
5. Stay in bed if you are there already. If an earthquake starts while you are in bed, the best thing is to stay there. Don’t get out of bed until the shaking stops. People who get out of bed during an earthquake are more likely to be injured as they walk or step on broken glass.
Think of possible protections in your home ahead of time if you live in an earthquake-prone2 area. What are the likely danger zones, and what are the possible protections? Suitable earthquake covers indoors include: tables, desks, study chairs —anything large enough to get under and cover yourself and hold onto. Standing in a door frame is no longer a good idea. It doesn’t provide that much protection from falling objects such as ceiling tiles. Notes: 1. shelter v. Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question. ( )1. The passage mainly tells you _______. Find protections in your house to shelter yourself before an earthquake. C. If you are in bed when an earthquake happens, stay in bed until it is over. D. Standing in a door frame is not suggested any more.
( )3. If a man is on the 22nd floor of a building when an earthquake occurs, what should he do? A. Go to the bed quickly and cover himself with pillows. B. Go to the nearest exit as fast as he can. C. Take cover under a big desk and hold onto it. D. Telephone the police.
( )4. How do you understand the underlined sentence? A. Slow down your walking speed in case you fall. B. Throw your most valuable things to the first floor.
C. Keep down near the ground before the shaking of the earthquake. D. Cut the electricity and gas supply by yourself.

Since 2000, 155 thousand square kilometers of the rainforest in the Brazilian Amazon has been cut down for timber1, pastureland2 or agricultural use. Clearing the Amazon rainforest
28
increases wealth and quality of life in Brazil, but these improvements are short-lived, according to new research by an international team including researchers from the US and Britain.
The Amazon is one of the least developed areas in Brazil, but it is also one of the most important places for natural resources. The research shows that the local people’s quality of life —measured through levels of incomes, literacy and life expectancy3 —increases quickly during the early stages of deforestation. This is probably because people make money on newly available natural resources. And higher incomes and new roads lead to better education, medical care and living conditions.
However, the new research suggests that these improvements are not long- lasting. Once the area’s natural resources have run out, the level of development will return to below the national average. Quality of life pre- and post-deforestation is both lower than the Brazilian national average. Ana Rodrigues, one of the researchers, said, \"The Amazon is globally recognized by its natural value, but it is also a very poor area. Although the deforestation does bring improvements in incomes, life expectancy and literacy, such gains do not last long.\" Notes:1. timber n. 木材2. pastureland n. 牧场3. life expectancy n. Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question.

We all want a safe and pollution-free environment. Some people have turned to government rules to protect themselves. 1 In South America the rainforest is being cleared so rapidly that we may live to see it disappear from the Earth; In Africa, some animals are hunted to extinction1. 2 Own a piece of the Earth. The British long ago learned how to stop the pollution of rivers. 3 For the last century, polluters were dragged into the courts by angry river owners and forced to restore all the damage they had caused. Every owner of these rivers was an environmental protector.
29
The environment that is \"unowned\" suffers from a condition known as \"the tragedy of the commons.\" 4 Ocean fish, for example, are considered to belong to anyone who catches them, so everyone tries to catch as many as they can. However, if the ocean, the home to fish, could be owned, the owners would have an incentive2 to keep the fish population up.
Make polluters pay. If someone pollutes a piece of the Earth owned by another, he or she should be required to restore it. This can be so expensive that a polluter could go bankrupt3 because of his or her own carelessness. If people are made responsible for acts of pollution, they will have little incentive to poison the air, land or water. 5
Notes:1. extinction n. A. How can we expect the polluters to stop pollution? B. Pollution of our environment, however, still threatens us. C. British rivers became goods that could be bought and sold. D. Anything belonging to everyone is the responsibility of no one. E. In Mexico, fishermen once claimed parts of the ocean as their own. F. What can we do to stop pollution?
G. Making polluters responsible for the damage they cause is helpful in preventing pollution. 1 2 3 4 5
Topic: Body Language
Section A
If the eyes are the windows of the soul, then the body is the mirror of our feelings. If we are feeling great, it shows in how we hold and use our body. If we look at someone else’s body, we can often tell how they are feeling by the signals their body is giving. So reading body language signals is a great tool in daily communication.
In case you don’t think that learning how to read and use body language is important, here are some numbers for you. 7% of the information we receive is from what people actually say, and 38% of the information we receive is from the tone1 and the speed of their voice; while 55% of the information we receive is from their body language.
These non-verbal2 signals will help you a lot in dealing with people, but you still need to focus on what people are saying. If you focus too much on their body language signals, you and the person may feel uncomfortable. It is useful to be able to read people’s body language, but it is equally useful to learn how to send the right signals and avoid the wrong signals. Body language is open to interpretation. Many signals have different meanings, depending on the person and the situation. Keep this in mind when you are trying to read a body language signal. Notes: 1. tone n. Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question. ( )1. The numbers mentioned in the passage are to ___________.
A. explain what body language is B. show the importance of body language C. tell us body language is less used than verbal language D. tell us body language is the only tool in communication
( )2. What’s the meaning of the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? A. Body language is widely used all over the world. B. People have already written many works on body language. C. Body language can be explained in different ways.
30
D. It’s too hard to understand the meanings of body language. ( )3. According to the author, body language is very ________.
A. useful in communication B. easy to misunderstand C. hard to understand D. simple to learn ( )4. In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you ______. A. what the wrong body language signals are
B. examples of how to understand body language correctly C. numbers related to how many people wrongly use body language D. an analysis of why people wrongly understand body language
Section B
Body language differences between men and women show up in two primary ways: differences in behavior and in the purpose behind their behavior. Some of these differences are due to nature. They are pre-programmed into each gender*. Others, however, are learned through experience and can differ greatly from one culture to another.
Women are generally more likely to display emotional behavior. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to display powerful behavior. In the modern world, however, these general differences are less obvious than before. This is due to the increased acceptance and comfort with each gender displaying non-typical body language in many different situations.
Despite this increase in freedom to display non-typical body language, there are still some general differences between men and women. Women tend to be better at receiving body language messages; while men tend to be less skilled at using body language to influence communication. There are actual physical reasons for these differences. Women read body language using up to 16 different parts of their brain at once; while men only use six or seven different parts of their brain at once. It is difficult to say which one is better, but each way does influence the receiving and sending of body language messages based on gender. Note: gender n. 性别
Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question. ( )1. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. the body language differences between men and women B. the physical differences between men and women C. how men are more likely to display powerful behavior D. how women are better skilled at body language
( )2. Which of the following is NOT a reason for body language differences? A. Physical differences. B. Development of society. C. They’re natural. D. They’re learned by experience. ( )3. Why are women more likely to show their emotions? A. Men want them to behave like that. B. It’s well accepted in modern society.
C. It’s partly because women are born to behave like that. D. Women bear more pressures in modern society. ( )4. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Awareness of body language differences can lead to better communication. B. Men use more parts of the brain than women do when reading body language.
C. Women are more skilled in dealing with the information from the body language than men do.

D. If you get to know someone, you should take the gender differences into consideration.
They might not use words to say what they want, but babies certainly have their own way of telling you what’s going on. Apart from the obvious tricks to attract attention, such as all kinds of crying and lovely smiling, babies speak with their bodies. They use body language to tell you what they want. Watching how your baby responds1 to what you do will help you understand his / her body language. Speaking quietly and using facial expressions will help your baby communicate with you.
To learn your baby’s body language is to _______. The key is really watching everything your baby does. Look at all parts of your baby’s body. Look at the way his / her feet kick, hands clasp2 and expressions move across his / her face. Babies about eight weeks old can tell the difference between people and have a different physical response to each, depending on their relationship with the baby.
Learn to recognize his / her various states of consciousness3 —awake, crying and different sleep stages. Then you will become familiar with these and be able to predict your baby’s movements. You’ll also learn to understand what he / she is saying to you. The way you respond to your baby can help settle him / her into a routine4. It is easier to build a routine if you do things in the same way.
Before your baby learns to talk, he / she will start experimenting with sounds —anything that can get a response. This includes sneezing and coughing. These noises are trying to attract your attention. The way you respond will help your baby learn to communicate.

Microsoft has published a new control system for the Xbox 360 (美国微软公司推出的家用游戏主机) that will likely start a future games-control-system war.
The control system, named Project Natal, doesn’t need a hand-held controller. A camera tracks the movements of the player and projects1 them onto the game on the screen. So when you are playing a football game, you simply need to swing a foot to kick the ball on the screen. The new Xbox 360 system goes much further than that of the Wii (日本任天堂公司推出的电视游戏机), which still needs a hand-held controller. The new control system also has a voice recognition system, allowing the player to directly speak to the characters within games. And, it is able to recognize different family members and logthem into2 their Xbox system. It can even read facial expressions.
The control system will definitely give players a new gaming experience. The players are the controllers, whose full body gestures will be tracked, not just two hands. Microsoft says that the Natal technology will bring a new gaming experience without forcing the players to buy a new device3.
这类题目的常见题干表达方式有“What does the underlined word mean?”
The passage mainly tells us _____.”
35
常见的题干表达方法有“How can you use the new product?”
常见的题干表达方法有\"How is the passage mainly developed?\" ▲▲细节理解题
常见的题干表达方式有“In the passage, the author states that ________.”
What was the author’s attitude towards ...?\"
Northwest China is part of the sandstorm centre in Central Asia. Sandstorms begin in desert areas. Sandstorms in China appear to have increased in recent years as a result of \"desertification\". This is a process that happens when land becomes desert because of climate changes and because people cut down trees and dig up grass.
Module 4)
◆According to the passage which is NOT likely to cause \"desertification\"?
A. Climate changes. B. Cutting down trees. C. Digging up grass. D. Saving water.
\"desertification\"是生僻词汇,但通过文中\"This is a process that happens when land becomes desert because of climate changes and because people cut down trees and dig up grass.\"对这个词的解释,同学们可以得知,气候变化、砍伐树木和破坏草地都能够导致\"desertification\而选项D节约用水显然不在此解释中,因此答案选D。
例2
Cellphones, or mobile phones, make it possible for us to talk to anyone from anywhere. Words and images are being sent throughout the world. Modern cellphones are more than just phones —they are being used as cameras and radios, and to send e-mail or surf the Internet. New functions are being added to the phones. The latest cellphones have features such as games, music and an electronic calendar that will remind you about appointments and important dates.
Cellphones have changed our behaviour and how we communicate. They are being used everywhere —sometimes where they shouldn’t. One headmaster says that phones are not allowed in the classroom. \"If a phone starts ringing in the classroom, teachers and students are disturbed and cannot work.\"The students obey the rules and agree not to use their phones in the classroom. \"I don’t dare to use the phone in school, because they will take it away from me,\"says John Hill, a student in London. John got his phone for his birthday, but his parents don’t let him use it in school. Some parents worry that their children will spend too much time and money on phone calls.

◆According to the passage modern cellphones are being used as all the following EXCEPT ______.
A. radios B. cameras C. electronic calendars D. printing machines
◆The second paragraph is mainly developed by _____. A. space B. examples C. time D. Comparison

Earlier, in the old days, women used to sit at home separated from the outside world. They used to manage the home and look after children. They were free of the responsibility of earning money to support the family, which was left to men.
With the arrival of industrialization1 and technological development, the lifestyles of human beings started to change. The needs of human beings started to grow. Older than any other capital city, Santa Fe, the capital city of the state of New Mexico, US, offers rich history, clear mountain air and surprising goods. It is called \"the City Different\"by local residents.
Late in July, we left St. Louis, the largest city of the state of Missouri, for a long weekend in Santa Fe. In that short time, we visited many shops and galleries, five restaurants, four museums, three music halls, two churches and a foundry1 where both the process and the art impressed us so much.
At a restaurant on Highway 591, eight miles north of Santa Fe, we ate stew2, followed by cherry pie, possibly the best cherry pie in the world. We ate one slice hot and one slice cold. The only thing that stopped us from eating it all was the cost —$6.99 per slice.

As to Henry Morton Stanley’s expedition1, most of the general public know only about his discovery of the lost African explorer Dr. Livingstone. However, searching for Dr. Livingstone was just the first of four great expeditions Stanley led into the deadly2 wilds of Africa. By the time Stanley began his fourth and final African expedition, he had already been a well-known name in both England and America.
The fourth and final expedition was a deadly journey. It suffered from politics and infighting3 as well as diseases and deadly natives. Gathering a small group of European explorers, he set off on a trip. He predicted that the expedition would take less than a year; however, it took three years in the end. This expedition is a historian’s dream. All of the surviving Europeans wrote about the journey; even the ones who didn’t make it published their letters from the expedition.
In the book written by Daniel Liebowitz and Charlie Pearson, the authors do a great job of drawing all these facts and sources together. This book is a wonderful adventure story that presents the horrors of African exploration. It is also an assessment4 of Henry Morton Stanley and his leadership of an expedition. It caused the death of hundreds of people while accomplishing almost nothing of value.

No matter how much weight she lost or how often she exercised, Lisa Rudes Sandel couldn’t control her stomach. She was fine with that until low-risejeans1 appeared. She couldn’t fit into her regular size six, so she had to go three sizes bigger to find a pair that fits her. They were uncomfortable, and they felt like falling down. Rudes Sandel wondered why there isn’t someone making nice jeans for women with a body like hers.
With only an idea and little money, Rudes Sandel called on her family for help. She lured her father, who was the manager of the women’s sportswear company before retirement; she also drew her brother, from a cloth company in Mexico. Rudes Sandel founded the business Not Your Daughter’s Jeans (NYDJ). The company would design jeans for women with big bodies.

Achilles was best known as a war hero in the Trojan War. He was handsome and brave, even though sometimes known for his anger. Without the help of Achilles, the Greeks would have never defeated the Trojans.
Achilles was the central figure in Homer’sIlliad. Achilles’mother Thetis was once told that her son would be greater than her husband. Many wanted to have a son by Thetis, but they did not want to take the risk of the prophecy1 coming true. Then Thetis had a son with an ordinary man. She dressed Achilles up as a young woman and hid him among the daughters of King Lycomedes. The prophecy told that Troy would not be taken without the help of Achilles, so people searched for him and managed to reveal his true identity2. He left me so many unforgettable memories last semester: picking him up at the airport, having Chinese New Year dinner with him, going to the Ocean Park, bargaining2 for cheaper prices in shopping centers, making potato salad for him, shedding tears when we said good-bye at the airport ... Arto is not only my partner matched by the Buddy Program, but also a real close friend.
Being Arto’s buddy has let me know not only more about Finland, but also more about Hong Kong. Indeed, I haven’t been to many places, so it was good to have somebody like Arto to show around. Moreover, I paid more attention to the scenic spots and learned more about them because I had to introduce the place, the customs and the culture to Arto.
As a student majoring in Tourism, I have benefited a lot from this Buddy Program. It has allowed me to make good friends and enriched my knowledge of the world. It has also given me the opportunity to explore Hong Kong and be aware of our own culture and characteristics.
Now, I can speak a little Finnish too: \"Tervetuloa Mina olen onnellinen kun tunnen sinut!\" It means \"Welcome! I am happy to meet you!\" Notes: 1. Finnish n. Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question.

Section B
I think it’s a great idea to volunteer with friends. I try to volunteer once a week with a group of friends. My group is made up of women who decide to volunteer and just happen to be able to do it together. It’s a great time to know what’s going on in their lives and benefit us at the same time.
45
Once a week may be impossible for lots of teenagers, so why not start by asking your friend to come to a common volunteer day with you? You can find out whether your friend is interested in it or not. Websites like Volunteer Match, Idealist, and Craigslist have good ways to help you search for opportunities. And there are volunteer centers in almost every community*. As my mum said, finding something that you both find interesting and meaningful could certainly give you more energy. Do you both love kids, the beach or Africa? Use this shared interest to find something that works for both of you.
Another idea is to step back from the direct volunteer by organizing discussions about the world. I have a friend whose book club focuses on reading books on popular social topics. Actively taking part in discussions about the world can be just as important as volunteering directly, though it may not satisfy your desire to help those in need. Note: *community n. 社区
Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question.
( )1. According to the passage, which one of the following statements is TRUE? A. The author wants to volunteer several days a week. B. Volunteering with friends helps you get to know them better. C. Only women are provided with opportunities to volunteer. D. The author doubts the value of volunteering with friends. ( )2. The author might not agree that _____.
A. volunteer work can be very interesting B. volunteer work can make you feel meaningful C. volunteer work can make you full of energy D. volunteer work can help you find a good friend ( )3. The underlined word \"it” in the last paragraph refers to \"_____\". A. the world B. your desire C. direct volunteer D. having discussions ( )4. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To call on people to volunteer with friends. B. To persuade people to better understand their friends. C. To show the great volunteer work done by people. D. To tell people about the importance of volunteer work.

How did the website Huffington Post become President Obama’s new best friend in the media?
At a press conference1, Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein was called by Obama to ask a question, which surprised the print, television and radio media. There was always a tradition that only reporter of some major media get chance to ask president questions.
Was it an example of Obama recognizing the increasingly important Internet journalism2 community? Or was it a way to thank Huffington Post for supporting him during the Obama-McCain presidential campaign3?
With the question, Obama placed Huffington Post a very important place in the nation’s media community, together with The New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Television Networks. It was a clear indication that the White House was determined to give more respect to new media groups, such as Huffington Post.
46
\"I have noticed the reaction to it,” Stein said. \"I’m happy. It indicates how the media is changing in a good way. There are more possibilities, different viewpoints and different questions.\"
For media watchers, Obama’s action was a signal that he would do things differently than the presidents before him. Or, perhaps, Obama could be paying back a debt. During the Obama-McCain presidential campaign, Huffington Post was one of the most loyal friends who helped and supported the Democratic Party. Notes:
