第二部分: 阅读理解(共两节;每小题2分,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。

A

For most people, the word “fashion” means “clothes”. But people may ask the question, “What clothes are in fashion?” And they use the adjective “fashionable” in the same way:

“She was wearing a fashionable coat. His shirt was really a fashionable colour.”

But of course there are fashions in many things, not only in clothes. There are

fashions in holidays, in restaurants, in films and books. There are even fashions in school subjects, jobs…and in languages.

Fashions change as time goes. If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will see that fashions have always changed. An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650. A fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860.

Today fashions change very quickly. Some of this is natural. We hear about things much more quickly than in the past. Newspaper, radios, telephones and television send information from one country to another in a few hours.

New fashions mean that people will buy new things, so you see there is money in fashion.

21. From this passage we know that “fashion” means ______.

A. clothes B. everything C. most of the popular things D. nothing 22.“There is money in fashion.” means ____________. A. fashionable things are expensive B. money comes from fashion C. people like new things

D. there are no fashions without money

23. Today fashions change very quickly because _______. A. people read newspaper every day

B. radios send information from one country to another C. new things that people like are often shown on TV D. people quickly learn what is happening in the world 24. The best title for the passage is ______.

A. Fashions B. Fashion mean clothes C. Fashion means money D.A fashionable colour

B

Once upon a time there was a little boy who was self-centered and had a very bad

temper. When he got angry, he usually said very hurtful words. As a result, he had few friends.

His parents didn’t know what they should do to change his personality. Finally, his father had an idea. He struck a bargain(协议) with his son. He gave him a bag of nails and a big hammer. “Whenever you lose your temper, I want you to really let it go. Just take a nail and hit it in the boards of that old fence. Hit that nail as hard as you can,” he told the boy.

Of course, those weathered boards in that old fence were almost as tough as iron, and the hammer was very heavy, so it wasn’t as easy as it first sounded. However, by the end of the first day, the boy had driven 37 nails in the boards. Well, many weeks passed. One day the young boy reported proudly that all the nails were gone.

At that point, the father asked his son to take a look at the fence. “you have done well, my son,” he said,“ but I want you to notice the holes that are left. No matter what happens from now on, this fence will never be the same as before. Saying hurtful words in anger produces the same kind of result. There will always be a scar(伤痕).”

Remember that a verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are much more valuable than the old fence. They make us smile. They help us succeed. They share our joys and sorrows, and support us through difficult times. And they will also open their hearts to us. It means that we need to treat everyone with love and respect. We need to prevent us hurting others. We should spend our time building bridges rather than barriers(障碍) in our life.

25. We can infer from Paragraph 1 that the boy was______

A.smart B.inconsiderate C.kind-hearted D.selfless 26.The boy’s behavior made his parents_____

A.happy B.concerned C.surprised D.angry 27.Why did the boy’s father ask him to hit the nails in the boards? A.because his father wanted to punish him

B. because his father wanted to distract his attention

C. because his father wanted to teach him a lesson

D. because his father wanted the boy to help him do some housework 28.What did the boy’s father want him to know in the text?

A.people around him don’t like him at all B.it’s easy for people to control their temper

C.his hurtful words may have a lasting effect D.he should make more friends during his lifetime

C

My dad is the kind of parent that expects too much of me. He would never be mad if I failed in something as long as I tried. Once he makes up his mind, he never changes it, which sometimes makes him seem too stubborn.

My dad’s strictness comes from the way he was raised. He grew up working long hours on his family farm. His dad was bad-tempered, and he would get angry enough to throw wooden boards at my dad when he did something wrong. In high school, my dad woke up at four in the morning to get his chores (家务) done and walked to school so that he would make it to the basketball practice by five.

School would have been easy , but my dad had dyslexia(朗读困难) which made it nearly impossible for him to read. Since dyslexia wasn’t recognized back then, every teacher thought that he was just unable to learn. My dad struggled in school until one teacher took time to sit down and teach him how to read and write.

The best part about my dad is his attitude toward daily life. He doesn’t worry about things he can’t control. When he comes home from a terrible day at work, he always puts on a smile on his face because he knows family is a lot more important than any other things.

I know that I got my best qualities from my parents and the way they raised me. My dad has shown me that with discipline and hard work I can achieve anything and have fun while I’m doing it.

29.What can we learn about the author’s father?

A.he is stubborn and carefree B.he is good at hiding his true feelings C.he had a bad relationship with his dad D.he liked playing basketball when in high school

30.Schools was difficult for the author’s father because______

A.he didn’t like school at all B.he had difficulty in reading C.the teachers were not skillful D.he spent much more time on his chores 31.It can be learned from last paragraph that the author_____

A.is very grateful to his father B.has achieved great success in life

C.had a hard time at school just like his father D.hope his father doesn’t expect too much of him.

D

While there are several reasons for using social networking service, it appears that its main function is for increased contact with friends and family along with increased participation in social activities. However, research has shown that young adults with a strong presence were more likely to display narcissistic(自恋的) antisocial behaviour, and too much use of social media was found to be strongly linked to underachievement at school.

Although a common argument exists in the media, several studies have shown that social networking services---- in particular----can have harmful effects on our happiness. Researchers from the University of Michigan assessed usage over a fortnight and found that the more people used it, the more negativity they experienced concerning their day-to-day activities, which over time caused higher levels of dissatisfaction with their life on the whole. In short, we evaluate our own experiences against what we believe our experiences should be.

Need any more proof on just how damaging social media can be? Look through Do Something.org, America’s largest not-for-profit website for the younger generation and social change. Its article “9 ways Technology Affects Mental Health” brings to light several sufferings social media put on mental health, including depression,

isolation, insecurity, FOMO, also known as “Fears of Missing out”.

The peer (同龄人)pressure to remain always connected----combined with the 24/7 accessibility that mobile media provide----means that there’s always more than one resource available for users, which unfortunately leads to the worst result of all: Addiction.

To handle the negative aspects of social media, we’d better begin learning to use social media appropriately and remember that health is wealth----physically, as well as mentally.

32.Which of the following is TURE according to paragraph 1? A.the social networking service is a must in modern society B. plays the most important part in contacting friends C.increased participation in social activities does young adults harm D.academic performance has something to do with presence 33.Do. Something. Org is mentioned in paragraph 3 to _____ A.introduce America’s largest not- for-profit website

B.provide the negative influence of social media on mental health C.find the way in which social media can be improved greatly D.tell the relationship between younger generation and social change 34.What does the author suggest us to do?

A.keep away from peer pressure B.make use of social media properly C.do exercise regularly to keep us healthy D.cut off the accessibility than mobile media provide

35.What does the test mainly talk about?

A.the negative effects of social media B.new studies on social communication

C.different views on the use of social media D.the rise of mental illness linked to social media
