Want to lose weight? It's time to get up close to your bathroom scale(磅称). According to studies, keeping track of your daily weight can help you lose weight and keep it off.

Researchers from University of Pittsburgh and University of California studied the self-weighing habits of 1,042 adults over a 12-month period. The participants, who either never weighed themselves or only weighed themselves once a week, didn't lose any weight. However, those who weighed themselves six to seven times a week lost an average of 1.7% of their body weight.

There is older science to back up this study. In a two-year study several years ago, the researchers at Cornell University divided 162 participants into two groups. Half of the participants were given a scale and asked to weigh themselves and record their results every day. The other half weren't given a scale or any instruction to record their daily self-weighing results. The researchers found that almost one-third of the participants who weighed themselves daily lost at least 5% of their initial weight during the first year.

The participants who weighed themselves daily and tracked their weight were more likely to associate what they ate with how much they weighed. Overall, the researchers think the simple act of stepping on a scale reinforces(强化) healthy eating and exercise patterns and makes the participants aware of times when their less-than-healthy behavior is affecting their weight.

Interestingly, daily weighing was most effective for the male participants in the group. Women certainly lost weight, but men lost more.

“It seems to work more effectively for men than women, for reasons we cannot figure out yet,” said David Levitsky, professor of nutrition and psychology at Cornell and the study's senior author. 24. What do we know about the two studies?

A. They lasted two years. B. They were done in the same way. C. They presented the similar findings senior researchers.

25. According to the researchers, people tracking their daily weight tend to_________. A. have a slim figure forever

B. behave on a proper basis

C. stay away from diseases D. lead a healthy lifestyle 26. What still confuses the researchers?

A. The way daily weighing affects females. B. Why daily weighing works better for men.

C. Why daily weighing helps with weight loss. D. The way daily weighing is made more effective.

27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. How can you keep weighing yourself B. Why should you often weigh yourself

C How often should you weigh yourself D. What can you do to lose weight naturally

Sometimes the day does not feel long enough. However, that is changing. New calculations have been made. The results tell us that the days are getting longer.

Scientists used a bination of tools to find out about Earth’s longer days. They used an astronomical theory. It includes using physics and chemistry to describe objects in space. They also used geochemical signatures(地球化学特征) buried in ancient rocks. The ancient rocks showed that 1. 4 billion years ago a day on Earth was 18 hours and 41 minutes long. A day on Earth is how long the Earth takes to plete one full rotation(旋转).

In modern times, a day is 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. That means the length of days has grown over time. It has increased by about 74-thousandths of a second every year in the last 1.4 billion years. And that is expected to continue .Scientists think it will continue for millions, if not billions, of years more.

As this happens, the moon moves further away. Stephen Meyers is a geoscientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He worked with Alberto Malinverno, a geophysicist at Columbia University in New York. Together they put out their findings

- 6 - / 19

in a science journal called Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They calculated how far away the moon is from Earth now. Over the past 1.4 billion years the moon has drifted(漂动)about 44,000 kilometers away from Earth. The moon is now a distance of 384,400 kilometers away from Earth.

As for the moon, it will not retreat from Earth forever. At some point in the far future, it will reach a settled distance when it will be seen only from one half of Earth, and never seen from the other.

28. What does the author want to do in Paragraph2?

A. Add some background information. B. Warn people of the change in Earth.

C. Introduce some astronomical theories. scientists used.

29. How is Earth different from what it was 1.4 billion years ago?

A. It has grown bigger. B .Its night time bees shorter. C. Its rotation gradually slows down. change greatly.

30. Which of the following best explains the underlined word\"retreat\" in the last paragraph?

A. Move away. C. Hide.

B. Set off. D. Disappear.

D. Its geochemical signatures D. Explain some methods

31. What will happen after the moon stops drifting?

A. The moon may disappear gradually. B. It will result in more longer days on Earth.

C. It may be difficult for people to see the moon. D. The other half of Earth won't see the moon at all.

D

How many times have you gone outside only to get your feet stuck in a mess of chewing gum(口香糖) on the sidewalk, or discovered something sticky beneath a table

or desk? As far as environmental pollution goes, chewing gum is far from our largest problem-but for people walking on the road, it could well be among the most unpleasant.

- 7 - / 19

Chewing gum causes plenty of messes for local governments, too. When gum-chewers leave their used gum on sidewalks, it's up to cities to pay for the clean-up efforts. In the United Kingdom, it costs about 150 million pounds every year to cover the cost of removing the sticky stuff from public walkways.

But 25-year-old Anna Bullus has e up with a method that could turn those used pieces of bright pink gum into a lovely shade of green. She spent eight months collecting old gum and working with it in a lab, eventually creating a pellet(颗粒)from the material, which she mixed with other ingredients to create the Bullus Recycled Gum Polymer(BRGP).

\"Yes, everyone thinks I am mad and most people feel sick about it, \"she told The Guardian. But Bullus' effort has paid off. She has used the BRGP to create pink bubble-shaped bins which can be used to collect used pieces of gum. She's set up her \"bubble bins” around Orpington College as a trial, but hopes to roll them out in more places before long. Once the bins are full, both the bins and the gum inside them will be recycled to produce more BRGP- -at which point, the possibilities are almost endless.

“The amazing thing is that you can use it for any plastic product,” Bullus said “I'd love to make some shoes, for example. Gum shoes, in fact.”

32. What can we learn about the chewing gum from the first two paragraphs? A. It is very popular in the UK. gums.

A. It's a recyclable material. gum.

I am Li Hua, one of your students. Nowadays, we can see a mon phenomenon that many students parents sit in the classroom as invigilators to invigilate an exam. I think it has both advantages and disadvantages First, there exists some doubt whether the parent can be a qualified invigilator. Second, the invigilator's child may be more nervous and thus can't perform well. However, if the parent can do a good job, it can be a valuable experience. After the parent's being involved in the school life, the munication between parents and children can be better. And the teachers will be free from the burden at the same time.

Since it is a double-edged sword, we'd better think twice before taking action.

Yours

Li Hua

Today we are visiting what is probably the most unusual

animal shelter in Britain.Don't expect to see any lions.elephants and sharks here. What it does have is a lot of very lucky cows, pigs.sheep and chickens.(17)Why lucky? Well, these poor creatures have basically been rescued from being your lunch by animal rights groups. They are able to live the rest of their lives happily here in Woodhill Shelter.(18) The shelter was set up by Jill and Ben Smith.Neither of them eats any animal products, but lives instead on a plant-based diet. The idea

to build a shelter first occurred to them in xx,and

it was two years later that they put the idea into practice.(19)Three years afterwards, they published a book called Our Farm Family, which was about the stories of the animals on the farm. All

the farm workers are volunteers without pay,but get free lunch and coffee in return for their work.(20)However,they think it is truly a rewarding experience.
