Section A

For many years after he formed his Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein visited many universities in different cities where he gave talks about it. He had his own chauffeur who drove him to where

he was to give the talk. The chauffeur sat at the back of the room while he was giving his lecture, and then drove him home.

One day, the chauffeur said to Einstein, \"Professor, I have heard you give your talk so many times that I know every word of it.\" \"Do you?\" Einstein said with a smile. \"Let\"s find out, shall we? You give my next talk for me. Nobody knows what I look like where we\"re going. I\"m just a name to them.\" Just before they reached the university where Einstein was to give his talk, he changed places with his chauffeur.

The chauffeur\"s memory was excellent and he was able to give Einstein\"s talk exactly as Einstein gave it. He did not understand a word he was saying, but this did not seem to matter. Then, as he was leaving the university, one of the teachers who had been at the talk came up to him.

\"Professor Einstein,\" he said. \"That was a most interesting talk. I\"d be grateful if you would answer a question.\" The chauffeur hurried on. \"I\"m sorry,\" he said, \"but I\"m late for my next meeting.\"

\"I\"ll walk with you,\" the teacher said. \"I want to talk to you about the problem.\" The teacher walked along beside the chauffeur and asked him to solve a very difficult mathematical problem. The poor chauffeur couldn\"t understand the problem, let alone attempt an answer. He did not know what to say. Then he had an idea. \"It\"s so simple,\" he said. \"Even my chauffeur could answer it.\"

He pointed to his car, where Einstein was standing, still wearing the chauffeur\"s cap.

\"This man has a maths question,\" he said to Einstein. \"It\"s so easy I\"m sure even you can answer it.\"

Summary:

Albert Einstein was a famous scientist who worked out the Theory of Relativity. He used to travel around the country with his chauffeur giving 1 on mathematics. His chauffeur knew his talk very well so Einstein asked him to give the talk at the next 2 where they did not know him. Section B

Resources can be said to be scarce in both an absolute and relative sense: the surface of the Earth is finite, imposing absolute scarcity; but the scarcity that concerns economists is the relative scarcity of resources for different uses. Materials used for one purpose can not at the same time be used for other purposes; if the quantity of an input is limited, the increased use of it in one manufacturing process must cause it to become less available for other uses.

The cost of a product in terms of money may not measure its true cost to society. The true cost of, say, the construction of a supersonic jet is the value of the schools and refrigerators that will never

be built as a result. Every act of production uses up some of society\"s available resources; it means the foregoing of an opportunity to produce something else. In deciding how to use resources most effectively to satisfy the wants of **munity, this opportunity cost must ultimately be taken into account.

In a market economy the price of a good and the quantity supplied depend on the cost of making it, and that cost, ultimately, is the cost of not making other goods. The market mechanism enforces this relationship. The cost of, say, a pair of shoes is the price of the leather, the labor, the fuel, and other elements used in producing them. However, the price of these inputs, in turn, depends on what they can produce elsewhere—if the leather can be used to produce handbags that are valued highly by consumers, the prices of leather would be correspondingly higher.

If art seeks to divorce itself from meaningful and associative images, if it holds material alone as its objective, then I think that the material itself ought to have the greatest possible plasticity, the greatest potentialities for the development of shapes and the creating of relationships. For that reason I think that the sculpture which has been created with a view to being form alone has been a great deal more successful and interesting than has been the painting in that vein. The sculptor sets out with two pre-existing advantages: one, that he must have craftsmanship, and the other, that he works in the round. He does not have to stimulate depth nor create illusions of depth because he works in volume—in three-dimensional form.

Thus Noguchi, working in marble, is able to develop relationships in three-dimensions rather than two and yet retain both simplicity and unity. He has at his disposal the advantages of light and space, and the natural translucence and glow of marble, all of which he exploits and reveals with great elegance.

Henry Moore is one of the great contemporary imaginers who has brought new materials and new concepts into sculptural form. He discovers the naturally heroic character of bronze and exploits feelingly the graining and fine surfaces of wood. Undoubtedly his most remarkable feat has been the surrounding of open space and his use of such space as a sculptural material. But beauty and craft and idea are still paramount with Moore and he never obliterates these qualities in the shock of the new.
