Part two Role-play

1. You are meeting an independent traveler at the railway station. Find out his travel plans and what you can do for him.

A--Excuse me, but are you Mr. Ian?

B--Yes, I am.

A--Oh, Mr. Ian, welcome to Beijing. I am Wang Gang, your local guide.

B--Glad to meet you, Wang.

A--Glade to meet you, too, Mr. Ian. And how war your trip?

B--Fine. It was pleasant.

A--My boss told me that you will leave Beijing the day after tomorrow, is that true? I mean, two days may be a little short to visit Beijing. Do you have a plan?

B--Yes. This afternoon, I want to go to the Forbidden City; tomorrow, the Great Wall; tomorrow night, I will go to watch a Beijing Opera performance; the last day, I want to travel the city by myself.

A--Your plan is great. And I think the performance’s ticket should be reserved as soon as possible, you know, it is the peak season now. Is that OK?

B--Yes.

A--OK, let’s go to the hotel and discuss this matter in detail after lunch.

2. You take a foreign visitor for a city tour. He has never been to China before and is curious about almost everything. Tell him briefly the history of your city, point out the main shops, buildings, places of interest along the way, and try your best to answer his questions.

A--Guys, welcome to Nanjing. As the capital city of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing is located in the lower reaches of Yangtze river. Now, we are on the North Zhongshan Road, where it starts is the south bank of Yangtze River, the mother river of China.

Now please look to your left, this is Zifeng Tower, it is the seventh-tallest building in the world.

As one of the four ancient capitals in China, Nanjing has a history of about 2500 years. Nanjing bears the reputation of the Capital of Six Dynasties, they are Wu, Eastern Jin, Song, Qi, Liang and Chen.

B--Sorry, Mr. Green. But I heard it was called the Capital of Ten Dynasties. What are the four extra dynasties?

A--Wow, sir, you are so learned. They are Southern Tang, Ming, Taiping

Kingdom, and Republic of China subsequently.

3. The tour leader tells you there are three Moslems in the group and another member who has high blood pressure and must have no salt in his diet. It is already five o’clock and the group is scheduled to have dinner at the Beijing Duck Restaurant. Find a way to handle this situation.

A—Sorry, Mr. Guan, I know we will have dinner soon. But I forget to tell you that there are three Moslems in the group and another member who has high blood pressure and must have no salt in his diet.

B—Wow, it is already five o’clock, you totally should tell me that earlier. But let me call the restaurant’s manager and have a try.

Hello, this is Mr. Guan. Sorry, manager, I just know that there are three Moslems and a visitor who is allergic to salt in our group. What can you do for them?

C—Don’t worry. We can prepare dishes for them specially, but we need 15 minutes at least.

B—Good, manager. Tank you very much.

C—You know what? Tell me in advance next time, please!

B—OK, I will.

A—How?

B—The manager will prepare dished for the four visitors specially, but maybe they will have to wait a moment.

Four

A group of American students headed by Professor White arrived in Beijing during this summer vacation. They will stay in China for 15 days visiting Shanghai, Wuxi, Suzhou, Nanjing, Shijiazhuang and Beijing. Liming, the national guide of the group, invited Professor White to discuss the travel arrangements of the group with him.

1. Find out what the visitors would like to see in China.

2. Make some suggestions about places of interest that the visitors might be interested in seeing and say a word or two about the special features of each place.

3. Mr. White is afraid his group won’t have enough time to see everything they’d like to, so please try to convince him.

4. The American students want to visit a university to experience the campus life of Chinese students. What might you say?

5. Plan an itinerary for the group and discuss it with Professor White.

Characters: Professor White, Li Ming

Professor White: It seems everything is OK. Shall we start discussing the itinerary?

Li Ming: Oh, yes. Have you got anything special in mind that you want to see?

Professor White: I think you know your country better than I do. But in these 15 days, we would like to visit Shanghai, Wuxi, Suzhou, Nanjing, Shijiazhuang and Beijing.

Li Ming: OK. Let me recommend you some of the places of interest in these cities. In Shanghai, we can go to the Oriental Pearl Tower and East Nanjing Road. In Wuxi, we can go to Ling Shan Buddha and Taihu Lake. We can go to the gardens in Suzhou and Zhao Zhou Bridge in Shijiazhuang. Beijing is the capital of our country; we can go to lots of places, such as the Imperial Palace, the Great Wall and the Summer Palace.

Professor White: Sounds excellent. But how can we go to so many places in such a short time?

Li Ming: Don’t worry. We can take the China Highway Speed. It’s very fast. We don’t need too much time on the way.

Professor White: OK. Some students among us want to visit a university to

experience the campus life of Chinese students.

Li Ming: You can go to the Qinghua University or the Beijing University. They are the best universities in our country.

Professor White: OK, I know. Thank you for your help.

Li Ming: You are welcome.

Situation Five

You are a local guide of a tourist group. After a day’s sightseeing, some old people in the group feel tired. They want to go back to the hotel immediately so that they can rest a little before dinner. There will be a concert in the evening that they would like to attend. But some people say they haven’t had enough time to go shopping since they came to China. Still others say, since there is some time left before dinner, why not visit another place of interest? Try to handle this situation.

Characters:Local Guide, Tour Leader, Tourist A, Tourist B, Tourist C

Local Guide: Now we have finished one day’s sightseeing. Shall we do something interesting else? Do you have some good ideas?

Tour Leader: Just relax. Let’s ask the tourists and listen to the suggestions from them.

Local Guide: Good idea.

(After a while)

Local Guide: Dear friends, how do you feel about today’s tour?

Tourists: Very good we think. We have enjoyed it very much.

Local Guide: What shall we do nest? What are your suggestions?

Tourist A: My wife and I feel very tired after a day’s sightseeing. So we want to go back to the hotel immediately so that we can rest a little before dinner.

Local Guide: OK, I know. But you can go to bed a little early just after dinner.

Tourist A: No, No, No…There will be a concert in the evening and we would like to attend it, so we need to have a rest now.

Local Guide: All right. What are others’ suggestions? What about you?

Tourist B: My girlfriend and I think we haven’t had enough time to go shopping since we came to China. So we want to go to the market to buy something memorable later.

Tourist C: There is some time left before dinner, why not visit another place of interest?

Local Guide: OK, everyone have different ideas. I will try my best to satisfy you.

(Go to talk with the Tour Leader)

Local Guide: Now some old people want to go back to the hotel to rest, but some young lovers want to go shopping, still others would like to go to another place of interest.

Tour Leader: It’s easy to solve. Since they have different ideas, we cannot make them together. Now let’s go back to the hotel first. We can let them do what they want themselves.

Local Guide: That’s perfect.
