三、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

As you are growing and changing, you have more responsibilities and also more freedom to spend time with other people. While you may feel ready to make your own decisions about where and when to go, your parents will put limits on you. So you may find you are arguing with your parents more than you used to. The reason why your parents do this is that they care about you and want to protect you from danger.

Here are some tips for how to avoid and handle arguments with your parents:

【1】Discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. This way you will be able to tell what they will say yes or no to before you make plans. Your parents can also explain to you why each rule is in place. Ask them to give you the chance to explain how the rules make you feel and suggest what you think are right rules. Your parents may be willing to listen to your ideas and use them when making rules that you both agree on.

【2】Try to remain calm when your parents say no to something. You will show your parents that you are responsible and mature (成熟的) by talking instead of shouting.

【3】Spend time with your family. Some teens argue with their parents over the amount of time they spend with their friends. Communicate with each other and make some special family time so that you can all enjoy the time you spend at home. Suggest activities that your whole family will enjoy together such as going on a hike, taking a bike ride, or going to the beach.

36. Your parents limit your activity mainly because they ______.

A. are worried about your safety B. are afraid it will affect your study C. think the thing you’ll do is bad D. want you to be with them at home A. you have to obey C. your parents make

B. you and your parents have discussed D. you and your parents can both accept

37. We can learn from the passage that the right rules are those .

38. When your parents prevent you from doing something, you should . A. argue with them B. control yourself C. fight for your freedom D. not listen to them

39. What’s the purpose of the family activities in the last paragraph?

A. To build up their bodies. B. To visit more places of interest. C. To make parents happy.

D. To make children and their parents get along better.

B

There was a time when people used to communicate by writing letters to each other and sending them

through the mail. As part of an elementary English class, students learned how to write different kinds of notes, which included the heading, body and closing in each. Among the different kinds they learned were the thank-you letters, which were common to send out for receiving a gift.

Today these are still the proper way to respond to (回应) receiving a gift. A thank-you letter should have the name and address of the person—it is going to be printed on the top of the page as well as the name and address of the person sending it. It should include the date the letter is being written and a friendly greeting as the opening line.

There are a number of reasons why people send thank-you letters. Some chances of giving the gift include Christmas, weddings, baby showers and birthdays. These are important events where the gift givers are usually present at a party. Even though you might thank your guests at some point during the party, it is still polite to send a card or a note some time afterward.

Other chances include hospital stays and funerals (葬礼). These are times when people send words and gifts of encouragement to the person with the illness or the loss. These people try their best to show how much they care and should be responded to with appreciation in the form of thank-you letters.

Creating your own notes to send through the mail does not have to be a tiring thing. If you have a computer and printer you can use different forms of words and pictures to make each one special to the person who will receive it.

Alexander the Great is one of the greatest persons in history. He is regarded as one of the greatest military strategists (军事战略家) of all time and he changed the face of the world by bringing Greek culture to Asia. When he died at the age of 32 he ruled the largest empire (帝国) in the world.

Alexander was Philip Ⅱ’s son. Philip Ⅱ was the king of Macedonia. When Alexander was 13 years old, Philip employed the famous teacher Aristotle to teach his son. Aristotle taught Alexander for three years and made him love the works of Homer, especially the Iliad. Alexander carried the Iliad given to him by Aristotle with him when in wars and is said to have been inspired (启发) by its stories of adventure and heroic action.

Philip Ⅱ died when Alexander was 20. Alexander became the king of Macedonia. In 334 BC, he made wars with the Achaemenid Empire and ruled Asia Minor. He then controlled the Persian Empire and that was followed by success in Egypt and parts of northern India. After a few years, he had become King of Babylon, King of Asia, King of the Four Corners of the World. Alexander used his special military strategy that is still taught today. He never gave up in difficulty and he never lost on the field of wars. After his early death from malaria (疟疾), Alexander’s empire broke down. Such a large empire of different peoples could not stand under one rule without him.

He spread the traditions of Greece wide throughout the known world and built cities, the most famous of which is Alexandria, a city in Egypt, which became the great center of business and culture. He brought a deeper knowledge of the Eastern world to the West. In short, he made the ancient world a much smaller place. 44. How did Alexander change the world?

Is “sorry” the hardest word? Not for the British Education Secretary Michael Gove, who has apologized (道歉) recently to his former French teacher for his behaving badly in class.

Thirty years ago in class he always asked his French teacher some strange questions that were impossible

to answer. He did this just to show he was clever, but he made the class so noisy that their lesson couldn’t continue. In a letter published in a magazine, Mr. Gove says, “It may seem late to say I’m sorry. But as my mum told me, it’s never too late to admit mistakes.”

The Education Secretary’s apology might have gone down well with his old teacher but it might land him in trouble. According to the Daily Mail newspaper, Mr Gove’s mother didn’t know he was causing trouble at school and said, “I would have punished him if I had known he was being so cheeky. But I have to say this time he did very well.”

Michael Gove’s apology also turned out to be a hit on the Internet and many people thought Gove’s apology wasn’t sincere. Researchers suggest that people have too high an expectation of the power of saying sorry. Dutch psychologist David De Cremer and his colleagues say in a study published in Psychological Science that receiving an apology isn’t as healing (能治愈的) as people like to think. However, apologies might be an important social tool as they reaffirm (重申) the existence of rules that need to be observed.

In Britain, the word sorry is often said and heard. If you step on someone else’s toe by chance you have to apologize but the person whose foot was squashed has to do it too. It conveys (传达) the idea that neither of you is left with hard feelings.

48. Why did Gove ask his teacher some strange questions?

A. To show he was braver than others. B. To show he was smarter than others.

C. To show he was more hard-working than others. D. To show he was more grateful to the teacher than others. A. To say one has done something wrong. B. To say one has done something meaningful. C. To announce that one has finished a hard task. D. To announce that one has made a great invention. A. right and proper

B. wrong and annoying

49. Which of the following can explain the meaning of the underlined word “admit” in Paragraph 2?

50. According to Gove’s mother, Gove’s apology was . C. too late and not sincere enough D. timely but not from the bottom of his heart

As soon as the weather gets warmer, charities start to ask for money. If you are also trying to raise money for a charity, you can make use of the following tips and tricks to help you.

Parties are great ways to raise money for charity. If you have a party with a theme that has something to do with your charity, that’s even better. For example, you can have a pink drink party to raise money for breast cancer research. At a party like this, every drink you make would be pink, so you could pink lemonade drinks and serve red wine. Tell your guests to be dressed in pink to keep the fun going. If you are raising money for another cause (事业) with a meaningful color, make drinks with those colors. And remember, when you send out your invitations, ask for a specific donation. When people come, they’ll give you money and you’ll be much closer to your goal.

四、任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)

Selling cookies or any other baked food is another wonderful way to raise money. You can make cookies cut out to look like ribbons (绶带) and paint them the color of your cause. Wrap them individually and set them out in your office for people to buy. This is not only a great way to make money, but also a great way to let people know you are taking part in a charity event.

If cookies are not your thing, ribbons are another great way to spread the word about your event. Make fun ribbons inexpensively and hand them out with note cards which show in detail how people can donate to you. All you need are a few spools (线轴) of fun ribbon in your cause’s color, some hot glues and safety pins (别针). Cut the ribbon, glue it together, and put a pin on the back. Easy and cheap!

In the age of the Internet, having a website is also a perfect way to tell your story and give details to people about how to donate. If you’re taking part in a charity event for a specific reason — maybe you suffered from a disease yourself, or maybe you know someone who has been ill, then a webpage with pictures and stories can help your friends and family see just how important this charity is to you, and they’ll then be more likely to donate to your cause.
